ZED Certification is the Government of India's MSME Sustainable (Zero Defect Zero Effect) Certification, run by the Ministry of MSME with the Quality Council of India. It recognises MSMEs that make defect-free products and keep the environmental effect of their operations low, at Bronze, Silver or Gold level.
Last updated: October 2026. Fees, subsidy and eligibility are set by the Ministry of MSME and QCI and can change, so we confirm the current position before you apply.
ZED stands for Zero Defect Zero Effect: products with no defects, and manufacturing with no adverse effect on the environment. The MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification Scheme was launched by the Ministry of MSME in 2022 to help small businesses improve quality, productivity, safety and sustainability, and to make them more competitive in domestic and export markets. The Quality Council of India is the nodal agency, and the scheme is not only about a certificate: it includes assessment, guidance and handholding.
The journey starts with the ZED Pledge, a free online commitment made on the ZED portal using your Udyam registration number. After the pledge you can apply for Bronze, Silver or Gold, depending on how ready your unit is. Each level covers more parameters across areas such as quality management, process improvement, energy and resource efficiency, waste management, safety and workforce practices. A QCI-accredited assessment agency visits the unit, and if non-conformities are found you get time to correct them before the certificate is awarded.
Certification cost is reduced by a government subsidy that depends on whether you are a micro, small or medium enterprise, with additional support for certain categories. Certified units can also look at related support for testing, certification and technology upgrade, and some buyers and banks recognise ZED. For official information visit the ZED portal of the Ministry of MSME. You need an Udyam registration to take part, and if you sell under your own brand, see our trademark registration online service.

A recognised certificate helps in tenders and with larger customers.
Certified units can look at related help for testing, certification and upgrades.
Records, safety and process control improve while you prepare.
A visible quality and sustainability badge supports premium positioning.
Pledge, application and fee payment are handled on the ZED portal.
From Udyam check to certificate, here is how ZED Certification works.
Timelines depend on your readiness, the assessment schedule and corrective actions. Not to scale.
We confirm your Udyam registration, enterprise category and unit details, and flag any correction needed first.
We register your unit on the ZED portal and complete the free pledge using your Udyam number and linked mobile.
A short gap review of quality, safety, waste and records helps you choose Bronze, Silver or Gold.
We file the application for your chosen level, and the subsidy applicable to your category is applied on the portal.
We brief your team, organise records and help you close any non-conformity within the time allowed.
After the agency's recommendation, the certificate is awarded and we note the validity date and upgrade options.
Keep these ready to avoid delays. The assessment agency may ask for more and we confirm the list for your unit.
The total cost depends on the level you choose, your enterprise category and how ready your unit is. It generally has three parts:
Set by the scheme for each level and reduced by the subsidy for micro, small or medium enterprises, with extra support for some categories. Published fee figures have been revised, so we confirm the current amount for your level.
Our fee depends on your level and the state of your unit and records. Call free for a custom quote before you pay anything.
Safety equipment, testing, record systems and corrective actions after assessment are separate and depend on what your unit needs.

Units in engineering, textiles, food processing, chemicals and other sectors.
Vendors who face quality and sustainability audits from bigger customers.
Units targeting overseas buyers who value quality and environmental practices.
MSMEs that bid for orders where quality credentials add weight.
Categories that can get extra subsidy support under the scheme.
Businesses that want to build quality systems from the start.
A quick view of how the levels differ. Ask us which one fits your unit today.
| Level | Best for | Depth of assessment | Preparation effort | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Units starting their ZED journey | Entry level | Lowest | Good first milestone |
| Silver | Units with established systems | Broader set of parameters | Moderate | Gap analysis recommended |
| Gold | Mature, export-minded units | Widest set of parameters | High | Strong documentation needed |
| ISO standards (separate) | Units needing an international management system | Per the chosen ISO standard | Varies | Not the same as ZED |
Honest readiness checks and tidy records prevent most delays.
The certificate is a milestone, not the finish line.
Use it in your profile, tenders and buyer discussions, in line with the scheme's rules.
Keep quality, safety and waste records up to date so the unit stays ready.
Move from Bronze to Silver or Gold before the certificate expires.
Note the validity date and start preparation well ahead of it.
