BIS certification: quick answer

BIS certification is a quality approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's national standards body. It confirms that a product meets the relevant Indian Standard and allows the manufacturer to use a BIS Standard Mark, such as the ISI Mark or the CRS registration mark, on the product.

  • Governing law: the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations
  • Mandatory for: products covered by a government Quality Control Order or compulsory registration; voluntary for others
  • Main routes: ISI Mark licence and CRS registration for electronics and IT goods
  • Testing: done at BIS-recognised labs; factory audit applies under some schemes
  • Overseas makers: through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme or an Authorised Indian Representative
  • Cost: BIS fees, lab charges and our professional fee; call free for a custom quote

Last updated: October 2026. Quality Control Orders, product lists, fees and procedures change from time to time, so we confirm the current position for your product before you commit.

What is BIS certification in India?

BIS prepares Indian Standards for thousands of products and runs conformity assessment schemes that check products against them. When a product passes, the manufacturer receives a licence or registration and can display the matching Standard Mark. Buyers, distributors and regulators treat the mark as proof of quality and safety.

For many products, certification is compulsory because a ministry has issued a Quality Control Order. Without it, such products cannot be manufactured, imported, stored or sold in India. For other products BIS certification is voluntary, but it helps with tenders, large buyers and consumer trust. The list of covered products is updated by the government, so it should be checked before every launch or import.

The right scheme depends on the product. Electronics and IT products notified under compulsory registration go through the Compulsory Registration Scheme, while many industrial and consumer goods use the ISI Mark route with a factory assessment. For standards, schemes, recognised labs and fees, visit the official Bureau of Indian Standards website. If you also need to protect your brand, see our trademark registration online service.

BIS certification: frequently asked questions

Quick answers on BIS certification in India.

What is BIS certification?

BIS certification is a quality approval from the Bureau of Indian Standards, the national standards body of India, confirming that a product meets the relevant Indian Standard. Certified products carry a BIS Standard Mark such as the ISI Mark or the CRS registration mark.

Is BIS certification mandatory?

It is mandatory for products covered by a Quality Control Order or compulsory registration requirement issued by the government. For other products it is voluntary. The list of covered products changes, so confirm it for your product.

What is the difference between ISI Mark and CRS registration?

The ISI Mark is a product certification licence granted after BIS assesses the factory and tests product samples. CRS registration applies to notified electronics and IT products, which are tested at a BIS-recognised lab and then registered with BIS.

Who can apply for BIS certification?

Indian manufacturers can apply directly. Overseas manufacturers can apply under the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme or, for CRS, through an Authorised Indian Representative.

How do I get BIS certification?

Identify the applicable standard and scheme, prepare the documents, get the product tested at a BIS-recognised lab, apply on the BIS portal, go through a factory audit where the scheme requires it, and receive the licence or registration after approval.

Which documents are needed for BIS certification?

Usually the manufacturer's identity and business papers, factory details, product and brand information, test reports from a BIS-recognised lab, a quality control plan and, for overseas applicants, an Authorised Indian Representative appointment. The list depends on the scheme.

How long does BIS certification take?

It depends on the scheme, product, lab testing time and how quickly gaps found during review or audit are fixed. An ISI Mark licence with a factory audit usually takes longer than a CRS registration.

How much does BIS certification cost?

The cost depends on the scheme and product and includes BIS fees, lab testing charges and our professional fee. BIS fees can change. We confirm the current charges and share an itemised quote after a free call.

How long is a BIS licence or registration valid?

The period is set by BIS for each scheme and is stated on the licence or registration. It must be renewed before it expires, so note the date and plan the renewal in advance.

What happens if I sell a product without mandatory BIS certification?

Manufacturing, importing or selling a product covered by compulsory certification without it can lead to penalties and seizure under the BIS Act, 2016 and the relevant order. Check the rules for your product before sale.
