The ISI mark is the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). A manufacturer can use it on a product only after getting a BIS licence, which is granted once the product is tested against the relevant Indian Standard and the factory is found capable of making it consistently. For products covered by a government Quality Control Order, the mark is mandatory before the product is made or sold in India.
Last updated: October 2026. Product lists, standards, fees and procedures change from time to time, so we confirm the current position for your product before filing. Inspection, testing and the final decision rest with BIS and the laboratories.
The ISI mark tells buyers that a product meets the quality and safety requirements of an Indian Standard and that the manufacturer works under BIS supervision. It is shown on the product along with the licence number and the standard number. It is one of the best-known marks under the BIS Product Certification Scheme.
Certification is not a one-time test. BIS examines the manufacturer's quality control system, tests samples, and then keeps checking through regular surveillance, including visits and sample tests. If the product no longer meets the standard, the licence can be suspended or cancelled.
For many products the mark is voluntary. For others, the government has issued a Quality Control Order that makes certification compulsory, and such products cannot be manufactured, imported or sold without it. The covered products and dates change, so always check the latest notification for your product. For official information, visit the Bureau of Indian Standards website.
Important points every manufacturer should know about the ISI mark. Rules can change.

| Mark or scheme | Applies to | Based on | Granted by | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ISI mark | Products with an Indian Standard | Factory inspection and sample testing | BIS | Mandatory for products under a Quality Control Order |
| BIS Hallmark | Gold and silver jewellery and artefacts | Purity assessment | BIS | Separate scheme for precious metals |
| CRS registration | Specified electronics and IT products | Testing and registration | BIS | Uses a different registration mark |
| ISO certification | Management systems | Audit of the system | Certification bodies | Not a product mark and not a substitute for ISI |
Early checks on the standard, the factory and the documents prevent most delays.
The licence is only the beginning. Here is how to keep it in good standing.
Use the ISI mark with the licence number and standard number as BIS requires.
Keep testing, records and calibration up to date for BIS surveillance visits.

Apply for renewal in time so that production and sales are not interrupted.

Quick answers on ISI mark certification in India.
The ISI mark is the Standard Mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards. It shows that a product conforms to the relevant Indian Standard and that the manufacturer holds a BIS licence to use the mark. It is granted under the BIS Product Certification Scheme.
The Bureau of Indian Standards, or BIS, grants the licence to use the ISI mark under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the rules and regulations made under it. The licence is granted to the manufacturer after the prescribed checks.
It is mandatory for products covered by a Quality Control Order issued by the government. For other products it is voluntary, but buyers and tenders may still ask for it. The list of covered products changes, so check the current notification for your product.
Identify the applicable Indian Standard, apply to BIS online with the required documents and fee, undergo factory inspection and sample testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory, and receive the licence once the requirements are met. The mark can be used only after the licence is granted.
Typically proof of the applicant's identity and business registration, factory address and ownership or lease papers, a list of manufacturing and testing equipment, the process flow and quality control plan, details of the authorised signatory, and test reports where needed. The exact list depends on the product scheme.
The time depends on the product, the readiness of the factory and test facilities, laboratory schedules and the accuracy of the application. It commonly takes several weeks to a few months. We cannot promise a fixed date because inspection and testing are carried out by BIS and the laboratories.
Costs include the BIS application fee, inspection charges, sample testing charges, annual licence fee and marking fee, plus our professional fee. The amounts depend on the product and scheme and can change, so we confirm the current fees before you apply.
A BIS licence is granted for a fixed period, which the manufacturer can choose within the limits set by BIS, up to a maximum of five years. It must be renewed before it expires, and the manufacturer must keep meeting the standard through regular surveillance by BIS.
Yes. BIS has a scheme for foreign manufacturers who want to export products covered by Indian Standards to India. It involves an application, inspection of the overseas factory and testing, and requires an authorised Indian representative.
The ISI mark covers product certification against an Indian Standard. BIS Hallmark applies to precious metal jewellery and artefacts. The Compulsory Registration Scheme applies to specified electronics and IT products and uses a different registration mark. All three are BIS schemes with different rules.
Using the Standard Mark without a valid licence, or selling products that must carry it without certification, can lead to penalties including fines and imprisonment under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and products can be seized. It is important to apply before manufacture or sale.
Look for the ISI mark with the licence number and the Indian Standard number on the product, then verify the licence details on the BIS website or the BIS Care app. If the details do not match, the mark may not be genuine.
