An additional place of business under GST is any place other than the principal place of business, in the same state, from where a registered person carries on business or stores goods, declared in the GST registration through an amendment.
Last updated: October 2026. Forms, time limits and procedures are set by the GST authorities and can change, so we confirm the current position before you proceed.
GST law treats the place from where you ordinarily carry on business, including where you store goods or keep books of account, as a place of business. Your registration shows one principal place of business and can list further places in the same state as additional places of business.
When you open a new warehouse, branch, retail outlet or unit, it should be added to the registration before or as soon as you start using it. Declaring it keeps your stock records, invoices and e-way bills consistent with what the department sees, and avoids trouble if goods are inspected at that location.
If the new place is in a different state, the position changes: GST registration is state-wise, so it usually needs its own registration. For official forms and applications, visit the GST portal (gst.gov.in) and the CBIC GST website (cbic-gst.gov.in).

Your registration matches the places you actually operate from.
Stock held at a declared place is easier to support with invoices and e-way bills.
Place-wise records reduce mismatches during reconciliation and audit.
Platforms commonly ask for GST details matching where inventory is stored.
Undeclared locations can raise questions during inspection or verification.
Add outlets and warehouses under one GSTIN within the same state as you grow.
From route check to an updated registration.
Timelines depend on document accuracy and the officer's processing. Not to scale.
We check the state of the new place and decide between amending your existing registration and applying for a new one.
You share the ownership, rent or consent papers for the new place, and we review them for consistency.
We add the address and activity details in the additional places tab and submit Form GST REG-14 with the documents.
If the officer asks for clarification or documents, we guide you on the reply until the application is decided.
Once approved, the new place appears in your registration, and you can download the updated certificate.
We suggest how to keep stock, invoices and e-way bill records separate for each location.
Keep these ready to avoid delays. Our expert will confirm the exact list for your case.
The cost has separate parts, and we show them separately so there are no surprises:
The GST portal does not charge a fee for filing an amendment or a new registration application, to our knowledge. We confirm this at the time of filing.
Our fee depends on the number of places, whether a new state registration is needed and the support required. Call free for a custom quote before you pay anything.
Rent, deposits and utility costs of the new place are separate and depend on your arrangement with the owner.

A quick view of how GST treats each location.
| Location | Where | Registration | How declared | Stock movement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Principal place of business | Main place in the registered state | Your existing GSTIN | At registration | Reference point for your records |
| Additional place of business | Other place in the same state | Same GSTIN | Amendment in Form GST REG-14 | Not a supply within the same GSTIN |
| Place in another state | Different state | New GSTIN, same PAN | Fresh state registration | Taxable supply between distinct persons |
Most problems come from late declaration and the wrong registration route.
Declaring the place is the start of correct place-wise compliance.
Keep the updated registration showing the new place, as marketplaces and banks may ask for it.
Maintain separate stock and movement records for each location to support invoices and audits.
Stock moved between registrations in different states needs a tax invoice and an e-way bill where required.
Apply to change or remove a place, generally within 15 days, so the registration stays accurate.
Under one GSTIN, returns cover all additional places in the state, so keep the data reconciled.
Quick answers on adding an additional place of business in GST.
An additional place of business is any place other than your principal place of business, in the same state, from where you carry on business or store goods, such as a branch, warehouse, godown or outlet. It is declared in your GST registration so the department knows every location you operate from.
Log in to the GST portal, go to the amendment of registration option, open the additional places of business tab and add the new address with its proof of possession. Submit the application in Form GST REG-14 and track it until the officer approves it.
An amendment application is generally due within 15 days of the change in particulars, which includes starting to operate from a new place. Delay can lead to queries or penalties, so it is better to apply before or as soon as you begin using the new place.
Generally yes. GST registration is state-wise, so a place of business in another state usually needs its own registration with a new GSTIN linked to the same PAN. Within the same state, you normally add the place to your existing registration by amendment.
You need proof of possession of the new place: for owned premises, a property tax receipt or electricity bill; for rented premises, the rent agreement with the owner's ownership proof; for consented premises, a consent letter with ownership proof. We confirm the exact list for your case.
Adding an additional place is generally treated as a core field amendment that needs the officer's approval, which is expected within about 15 working days of the application. If the officer raises a query, it can take longer, so we cannot promise a fixed date.
Yes. If you store goods in a warehouse or an e-commerce fulfilment centre, that location should be reflected in your GST registration. If it is in another state, you will generally need registration in that state as well. The right route depends on where your stock is held.
Moving goods between places under the same GSTIN in one state is not a supply. Moving goods between your registrations in different states is treated as a supply between distinct persons and attracts GST, with an invoice and e-way bill where applicable.
Operating from or storing goods at an undeclared place can lead to notices, penalties, and problems with goods in transit during inspection. It can also create mismatches in stock and ITC records, so it is safer to declare the place before use.
Yes. If you close or stop using a place, apply for an amendment to remove it from your registration, generally within 15 days of the change. Keep the closure details and stock records ready, since the officer may ask for them.
