ISO certification: quick answer

ISO certification is independent confirmation, after an audit, that your organisation's management system meets an ISO standard such as ISO 9001 (quality) or ISO 27001 (information security). In India, the certificate is issued by an independent certification body, ideally one accredited by NABCB, after a documented system is implemented and audited.

  • Who issues it: an independent certification body, not ISO itself and not the consultant
  • Common standards: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001 and ISO 22000
  • Audit: a two-stage initial audit, then yearly surveillance audits
  • Validity: generally three years, then recertification
  • Is it mandatory: usually voluntary, but often asked for by customers and tenders
  • Fee: our consulting fee plus the certification body's fee; call free for a custom quote

What is ISO certification in India?

ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, publishes standards that describe good practice for managing quality, environment, safety, information security and more. A business that follows such a standard can ask an independent certification body to audit it. If the audit shows the requirements are met, the body issues a certificate. The certificate applies to the organisation's management system and its stated scope, and it does not certify that a product is of a certain quality.

Most current ISO management system standards share a common structure of ten clauses, covering context of the organisation, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. This makes it easier to combine standards, for example quality and environment, into one integrated system.

Not every certificate is equally useful. Customers and tenders often accept only certificates from certification bodies accredited by a recognised accreditation body, such as NABCB (National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies) under the Quality Council of India. A certificate issued without a real audit may be rejected and can harm your reputation, so check the body's accreditation before you apply.

For the standards themselves, see the International Organization for Standardization, and to check accredited certification bodies in India, see NABCB. While you build your brand, you can also protect it with our trademark registration online service.

ISO certification: frequently asked questions

Quick answers on ISO certification in India.

What is ISO certification?

ISO certification is independent confirmation, after an audit, that an organisation's management system meets the requirements of an ISO standard such as ISO 9001 for quality or ISO 27001 for information security. It applies to the organisation's processes, not to a product.

Who issues an ISO certificate?

ISO publishes the standards but does not issue certificates. Certificates are issued by independent certification bodies after an audit. In India, look for a certification body accredited by NABCB under the Quality Council of India. We help you prepare and coordinate with the body, but the certificate is issued by it.

Which ISO certification is right for my business?

It depends on what customers, tenders or regulators ask for. ISO 9001 covers quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, ISO 27001 information security and ISO 22000 food safety. Many businesses start with ISO 9001.

How do I get ISO certification in India?

Choose the standard and scope, run a gap analysis, prepare and implement the documented system, train staff, complete an internal audit and management review, then apply to an accredited certification body for the certification audit. Once any findings are closed, the certificate is issued.

How long does ISO certification take?

It depends on the size of the organisation, the number of sites, the standard and how ready your processes already are. A small business with simple processes can be quicker, while larger or multi-site organisations take longer. We confirm a realistic timeline after the gap analysis.

How much does ISO certification cost?

Cost depends on the standard, number of employees, sites and audit days required. It has two main parts: our consulting and documentation fee, and the certification body's audit and certificate fee, which is charged separately. We quote after a free call, with both parts shown clearly.

Which documents are needed for ISO certification?

Business registration details such as incorporation papers, GST or Udyam, a description of your activities and scope, number of employees and sites, an organisation chart, existing policies and procedures, and licences relevant to your sector. We prepare the management system documents with you.

How long is an ISO certificate valid?

A certificate is generally valid for three years, subject to surveillance audits during that period, usually once a year. Before the three years end, a recertification audit is needed to renew it. If surveillance is skipped or fails, the certificate can be suspended or withdrawn.

What is an accredited ISO certificate and why does it matter?

An accredited certificate is issued by a certification body that has been assessed by an accreditation body, such as NABCB in India. Many customers and tenders accept only accredited certificates. Be careful with offers of instant certificates without an audit, because they may not be accepted or verifiable.

Is ISO certification mandatory?

Generally no, it is voluntary. It may however be required by a customer, a tender or a sector regulation, for example in supply chains, government procurement or specific industries. Check the requirement in your contract or tender before choosing a standard.

Can a small business or startup get ISO certified?

Yes. ISO standards are designed to apply to organisations of any size, and the system is scaled to your processes. A small team usually needs simpler documents and fewer audit days, but the system must still be genuinely implemented and followed.

What happens if the audit finds non-conformities?

The auditor records findings as major or minor non-conformities. You analyse the cause, correct the issue and submit evidence within the time set by the certification body. The certificate is issued once the findings are closed, and a major finding may need a follow-up audit.
