What is e-way bill registration?

An e-way bill is an electronic document that must accompany a consignment of goods above the notified value while it moves by road, rail, air or ship. You generate it on the e-way bill portal or through software connected to it. Before you can do that, you must be registered on the portal.

For a GST-registered person, registration is quick but depends on your GST details being correct, especially the mobile number registered on the GST portal. Problems usually arise from mobile or GSTIN mismatches, not from the form itself. Registration is only the first step, and each movement of goods still needs its own e-way bill.

For official information and login, visit the e-way bill portal (ewaybillgst.gov.in) and the GST portal (gst.gov.in).

E-way bill registration: frequently asked questions

Quick answers on e-way bill registration in India.

What is e-way bill registration?

E-way bill registration is signing up on the e-way bill portal using your GSTIN so you can generate e-way bills for movement of goods. A registered taxpayer verifies a mobile OTP and creates a username and password. The e-way bill itself is generated afterwards for each consignment.

Who needs to register on the e-way bill portal?

GST-registered suppliers, recipients and transporters who move or arrange goods above the notified value need access. Transporters not registered under GST can enrol to obtain a transporter ID, and in some cases unregistered persons can also enrol. The requirement depends on who is responsible for the movement.

How do I register on the e-way bill portal?

Go to the e-way bill portal, choose registration, enter your GSTIN and the captcha, and verify the OTP sent to the mobile number registered on the GST portal. Then create a username and password and log in. We help you with each step and fix OTP or mismatch problems.

When is an e-way bill required?

An e-way bill is generally required for movement of goods when the consignment value exceeds Rs 50,000, whether for supply, return or certain inward supplies from unregistered persons. Some states notify a higher limit for movement within the state, and some goods are exempt, so we check your case.

Is there a fee for e-way bill registration?

The e-way bill portal does not charge a fee for registration or generation, to our knowledge. Costs you may face are billing software, API providers if you integrate, and our professional fee, which we quote separately after a free call.

What are Part A and Part B of an e-way bill?

Part A holds the details of the goods and parties, such as GSTINs, invoice, HSN, value and place of delivery. Part B holds the transport details, mainly the vehicle number or transporter document. The e-way bill is complete and valid only when both parts are filled.

What is the validity of an e-way bill?

Validity depends on the distance, generally one day for every 200 km for ordinary cargo, and one day for every 20 km for over-dimensional cargo. The validity can generally be extended within a window around expiry, so we track timelines for long journeys.

Can an e-way bill be cancelled or extended?

An e-way bill can generally be cancelled within 24 hours of generation if the goods have not moved or the details were wrong. Validity can be extended by the person in charge of the goods if the consignment will not arrive in time, subject to the prescribed conditions.

Why can I not generate an e-way bill on the portal?

Common reasons include GSTIN or mobile mismatch, wrong HSN or invoice details, and a block because GST returns were not filed for two consecutive tax periods. A block generally clears after pending returns are filed. We diagnose the cause and guide you to fix it.

What is the penalty for moving goods without an e-way bill?

Goods moved without a valid e-way bill can be detained along with the vehicle, and a penalty linked to the tax on the goods can be imposed under Section 129 of the CGST Act. It is far safer to generate the e-way bill before the goods move.
