ISO 9001 certification confirms, through an independent audit, that your organisation runs a quality management system (QMS) that meets the ISO 9001 standard. In India, the certificate is issued by an independent certification body, ideally one accredited by NABCB, after you implement the system, run it, and pass a two-stage audit.
Last updated: October 2026. Standards and audit requirements can change, so we confirm the current edition with your certification body. We do not issue ISO certificates.
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems. It does not set product specifications. It asks an organisation to understand its customers and context, plan its processes and risks, control how work is done, check the results, and improve. Certification means an independent auditor has verified that this system exists, is implemented and works within the agreed scope.
The standard rests on seven quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making and relationship management. It uses risk-based thinking, so the system is meant to prevent problems and not just record them.
Documentation should serve the business and not the other way round. The current standard asks for documented information in specific areas, and a separate quality manual is not mandatory. Auditors look at whether the system is actually used, so records from real operations matter more than polished documents.
As with any ISO certificate, accreditation of the certification body matters, because many tenders and buyers accept only accredited certificates. See the ISO page on ISO 9001, and check accredited bodies on the NABCB website. For other standards, see our ISO certification service and ISO 27001 certification.

From scope to certificate, here is how ISO 9001 certification works.
Timelines depend on your size, number of sites and how organised your processes already are. Not to scale.
We agree the products, services and sites covered, and note customer, tender and legal requirements that the system must meet.
We compare your current practices with each requirement and give you a clear list of what is missing, with priorities.
We map your key processes and prepare the required documented information, sized to your business and not copied from a template.
Staff are trained on their roles, and the system runs long enough to produce real records for the auditor.
An internal audit checks the system, and management reviews the results and decides on improvements before the external audit.
The accredited body carries out Stage 1 and Stage 2. Any findings are corrected with evidence, and the certificate is then issued.
Keep these ready to avoid delays. Our expert will confirm the exact list for your case.
The cost of ISO 9001 certification depends on the size of the organisation, the number of sites and how much work your processes need. It generally has three parts:
For gap analysis, documentation, training and audit support. Call free for a custom quote before you pay anything.
Charged by the accredited body for the audit and certificate, and for later surveillance audits. It is separate from our fee and is shown clearly.
Extra sites, calibration of instruments, re-audits after major findings and transfers from another body are charged separately.

| Route | Best for | What is involved | Cost | Credibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accredited body with consulting support | First-time certification | Gap analysis, documents, training, audit | Consulting plus body fee | High, widely accepted |
| Accredited body, self-prepared | Teams with in-house quality staff | You build the system, the body audits it | Body fee, more internal effort | High, widely accepted |
| Unaccredited or instant certificate | Not recommended | Little or no real audit | Often low | May be rejected or unverifiable |
| No certification | When nobody requires it | Nothing external | No fee | No independent proof |
A real system with management support prevents most problems.
The certificate starts a three-year cycle. Here is how to keep it in force.
Verify the name, scope and dates, and use the certificate and logo only as the certification body allows.
Keep using the system, record corrective actions and review results against your quality objectives.
Plan the yearly surveillance audit in advance, with an internal audit and management review before it.
Schedule the recertification audit before expiry so there is no gap in certification.

Quick answers on ISO 9001 certification in India.
ISO 9001 certification is independent confirmation, after an audit, that an organisation's quality management system meets the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard. It shows that the organisation manages its processes to consistently deliver products or services that meet customer and legal requirements.
ISO publishes the standard but does not issue certificates. An independent certification body issues the certificate after an audit. In India, look for a body accredited by NABCB under the Quality Council of India. We help you prepare and coordinate with the body, but the certificate is issued by it.
Generally no, it is voluntary. It may however be required by a customer, a tender or a supply chain, and many government and private tenders ask bidders for a valid ISO 9001 certificate. Check the eligibility conditions in your tender or contract before you apply.
The standard has ten clauses, and the requirements sit in clauses four to ten. They cover the context of the organisation, leadership, planning and risks, support such as people and resources, operations, performance evaluation including internal audit and management review, and improvement.
Define the scope, run a gap analysis, map your processes, prepare the required documented information, train staff and run the system to build records, complete an internal audit and management review, then apply to an accredited certification body for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits.
It depends on the size of the organisation, the number of sites and how organised your processes already are. The system also needs to run for a period so that there are records to audit. We confirm a realistic timeline after the gap analysis.
Cost depends on the number of employees, sites and audit days needed. It has two main parts: our consulting and documentation fee, and the certification body's audit and certificate fee, which is charged separately. We quote after a free call, with both parts shown clearly.
The current standard requires documented information in specific areas, such as the scope, quality policy, objectives, evidence of competence, calibration, supplier evaluation, internal audit and management review results, and corrective actions. A separate quality manual is not mandatory, but many organisations keep one.
A certificate is generally valid for three years, with surveillance audits during that period, usually once a year. A recertification audit is needed before the three years end. If surveillance is missed or serious problems are found, the certificate can be suspended or withdrawn.
Yes. ISO 9001 is designed for organisations of any size or sector, including services, trading and construction as well as manufacturing. A small team usually needs lighter documents and fewer audit days, but the system must be genuinely followed.
ISO 9001:2015 has been the long-standing edition. ISO has been revising the standard, so we confirm the current edition and any transition period with your certification body before you start. Standards can change, and requirements follow the edition your certificate is issued to.
No. ISO 9001 certifies the quality management system, not a product or service. It shows that your processes are controlled and improved, but it does not approve a product. Product-specific approvals or marks are separate, and the certificate and logo should not be used to imply product certification.
